Root Canal

Root canals are necessary when an untreated cavity or broken tooth reaches all the way to the pulp where the nerve and blood vessels reside.

  • An infected pulp eats away at the surrounding bone (this is known as an abscess)
  • Symptoms include sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth.  However, sometimes no symptoms are apparent and you may be unaware of any problem until a checkup.
  • A root canal cleans out the infected tooth pulp and disinfects the canals of the tooth.  The canal is filled in to prevent any further infection.
  • A core build-up and crown is usually recommended for a tooth after a root canal due to it losing its strength and integrity.
